Purple and Pink and Unicorns -take me back to the 80's!

1980's

I had a job this weekend - 15 full color spot illustrations that were due yesterday. They were for kids product packaging, and they had to be of : misc. hearts, rainbows, butterflies, flowers, castles, princesses and last but not least, unicorns. Here's a picture of some of them. (no particular order, I just pasted a bunch together)

This job was fun, because it took me back to 1985, when I was 12 years old and unicorns were all that I would draw. It was very nostalgic. Lets just say, I had alot of practice. My family can attest to that.

I got to use lots of pinks and purples in bright, vile hues, and also pastels. It was horrible, and so much fun! I laughed the whole time. When I was a kid, I was obsessed by unicorns. And when I was 12, I was also really into Duran Duran. I was in love with John Taylor and someday we would meet, and he'd marry me for sure. Somewhere along the line, the two were mixed. The lovechild in my sketchbooks were "Duran Duran Unicorns". Scarey. They even played instruments.

My poor sister who had to share a room with me was tortured by the Duran Duran posters that I plastered all over the walls. My brother, who liked the Grateful Dead and classic rock, lived in the room next door and would turn up his stereo when I'd play one of the 4 cassette tapes that I owned (they were all Duran Duran , of course) to block out the sound. Once my mom even told me to shut it off because she was so sick of hearing it. (it's amazing how the 12 year old will never grow tired of playing the same songs over and over and over again. Oh - and I would SING to it too. Picture that.) I think they are all still mentally scarred from it. Sorry guys! :)

And then, while ransacking my sister's record collection - I discovered punk rock....but that's a story for another time.

Your post made me laugh. Very well could've been a description of me in the early 80's. I was all about unicorns, rainbows and Duran Duran. Everything changed when I discovered punk rock, too.

I do believe I'd pay money for a drawing of a Duran Duran Unicorn. Especially if you could some how depict it as being hungry like the wolf.

Great post.
